The Artist

"The  contemplation  of  beauty  causes  the  soul  to  grow  wings."       Plato

I began my career in photography studying Photojournalism, earning a degree from the University of Oregon in Eugene.  My first travel overseas 35 years ago, though, sparked an interest in capturing scenes in foreign lands that continues to this day.

I have traveled extensively in the last three decades throughout Europe and North America, searching not only for beautiful scenes, but ones that allow me to create contemplative travel images rich in color and texture.

I have been working professionally as a travel photographer for 25 years, and have been regularly published by calendar, poster, and magazine publishers throughout the country.  I routinely exhibit my photographs at juried art festivals around the country, from New York to Seattle, and Miami to San Diego.

Techniques

I photographed with 35mm film cameras when I first learned basic photography skills very early on. I moved on to 2-1/4 medium format for awhile, loving the increased resolution those cameras produced.  It was decades later when I reluctantly shifted to embracing digital technology, due primarily to the technological advances offering very fine resolution.  Now I use the Sony mirrorless system, comprising of the A7 RII & the A7 III bodies.  Virtually every image created is shot on a tripod, my favorite being one by Really Right Stuff.

career highlights

Having one of my photographs chosen by the Sierra Club for one of their calendars back in the '80s thrilled me beyond belief!  Ten years later, I was published every year by six different calendar companies here in the States and enjoyed several that were exclusively my own images.  Having images selected by interior designers and galleries was always an honor, but I admit to being humbled when the Neu de Gaudi Museum in Barcelona chose three of my Southwest landscapes for their permanent collection.

Inspiration

I have long admired two iconic figures from the mid-20th Century photography scene: Ansel Adams and Elliot Porter.  From Adams I learned to be inspired by the natural world in all its forms and landscapes.  From Porter I learned that fine art photography CAN be made in color!  His attention to minute details in a scene, along with his use of color as a design element, encouraged me to challenge the existing prejudice that B&W images were the only photographic medium worthy of being called "art."
